A565 Junction Improvements Phase 1

Overview

Sefton Council is planning to improve walking, wheeling and cycling routes along the A565 Formby Bypass between Formby and Thornton.

This key north-south route will become a safer, more accessible path for pedestrians (including those pushing prams / pushchairs) cyclists, and those wheeling (mobility scooter/ aids  and wheelchair users). It will also link with current local and national routes (such as the Coastal Road and the NCN 62).

Because the corridor is so large, the improvements will be carried out in stages. This approach will make it easier to secure funding and manage traffic disruption during the work. Phase 1 will focus on the priority locations listed below. Future phases are being planned to include improvements at Altcar Road, North End Lane, and the junctions at Orrell Hill Lane/Scaffold Lane/Lady Green Lane.

About Phase 1

Phase 1 proposals are still at an early stage of design and include improvements to the following junctions:

1. Southport Road/ Southport Old Road / A565 Formby Bypass Roundabout, and improvements to the side road junctions with Moss Side and North Moss Lane.

2. Coastal Road / Moor Lane / A565 Formby Bypass (Liverpool Road), including a new cycleway along the Coastal Road and improvements at the Pinfold Lane junction.

Why are we proposing these changes?

The proposals aim to:

• Make it safer to get around locally, and make longer journeys by cycling and walking
• Make it easier to cross the road, whether you’re walking, cycling, using a wheelchair or pushing a pram/ pushchair
• Create better, more direct routes for everyday journeys
• Encourage more people to travel actively, helping to reduce traffic and improve air quality and make continuous routes
• Support healthier lifestyles and a more pleasant local environment
• Help connect to longer distance walking, wheeling and cycling routes including the Cheshire Lines, National Cycle Network and the Trans Pennine Trail

Your feedback will help us to:

• Understand how people currently use the junction and the challenges they face
• Identify what matters most to the local community
• Refine the proposals so they better meet local needs
• Shape the next stage of design
