A59/Dodds Lane junction improvements

Overview

Sefton Council is in the early design stages for proposed improvements to the A59/Dodds Lane junction.

Dodds Lane currently only has one pedestrian controlled crossing, which creates a potential risk for a collision with vehicles if people cross at other locations at the junction. Additionally, the traffic layout can be confusing and this also adds to a safety risk for motorised and non-motorised users.

The changes are being considered for public safety at the junction for all users. This includes improving the safety traffic as well as for more vulnerable road users, like younger and older pedestrians, and those who are disabled and visually impaired.

The proposals will:

  • make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross through improved crossing facilities through upgrading the traffic lights to include signalised pedestrian crossings.
  • make it safer for motorists by improving right-turn movements, improving the junction layout.

Changes to the residential service roads

The design would need a change to the residential service roads to ensure that traffic flows efficiently. This has been assessed using 2025 traffic data and computer modelling of the junction.

Introducing traffic lights for all new pedestrian crossings without changes to the residential service roads would potentially cause increased traffic delays at the junction.

We want your views

This is an initial engagement is seeking your views to help shape the detailed design. A formal, lengthy consultation period on the designs will be held in the future as further details are developed.

Sefton Council are seeking people’s views on Option A and Option B.

  • Option A makes the service roads one-way into them from the A59.
  • Option B would close the service road to traffic from the A59, removing the option to turn in or out of them from the A59.
  • Option B would enable the service road linking Dodds Lane and Ambleside Road to be a one-way route.

Frequently asked questions can be found here and at the bottom of the page.

At the end of the survey you will be asked if you want to give an email address so that you can receive a copy of your response. You do not have to do this. The email address is only used to send the email to you from Your Sefton Your Say. The email address will not be stored with the responses and Sefton Council will not have access it, unless you have given your email address as part of the survey.
