A565 Junction Improvements Phase 1

Closes 2 Sep 2026

Southport Road/ Southport Old Road / A565 Formby Bypass Roundabout

We are proposing the following improvements to  Southport Road / Southport Old Road / A565 Formby Bypass Roundabout:

1.   A new crossing on the A565 Formby Bypass, making it easier and safer for people walking and cycling to cross.

2.  A new crossing on Southport Road approach, making it easier and safer for people walking and cycling to cross.

3.  A wider central refuge island (middle bit) on Southport Old Road, creating more space for people to wait safely while crossing.

4. A separate cycle lane and footway along one side of the A565 Formby Bypass all the way to Mittens Lane, including improving how cyclists and walkers/ wheelers move across the Moss Side junction.

5. Trimming the trees to make it easier for all to see clearly around the roundabout.

The images below provide an overview of the proposed improvements:

Option B fully closes Moss Side to motor traffic, allowing the cycle route and footway to continue uninterrupted.
